The Pawnee County Humane Society is glad that you are thinking of adopting a new family member! Adopting a shelter/rescue animal truly is giving the gift of life and the animals never forget it! The PCHS strives to properly match the right family with the right pet. Please keep this in mind while filling out paperwork and speaking with the staff. The PCHS just wants to make sure that you and the pet you’ve chosen will be a good fit for each other. This helps to ensure that when an animal goes to their forever home, that’s exactly what it is! Their lives are in our hands! Some of the things that the PCHS requires of new homes are the following:
The second step is filling out the adoption application. This may be printed off and hand delivered, returned by email (pchs@pawneehumane.com), or returned by postal mail to Pawnee County Humane Society, Inc., PO Box 224, Larned, KS 67550. If the application is sent by e-mail, please call to verify that it was received. Applications will be reviewed and applicants will be contacted as soon as possible. If the PCHS receives several applications on an animal, each application will be reviewed and the most appropriate home will be selected. Sometimes a certain family is just a better match. That doesn’t mean that the others wouldn’t have been good homes!
When an animal is adopted from the PCHS the Adopter will sign an “Adoption Receipt”. Please take a moment to look this over. It is important that the adoptive family understands what is required of them after the adoption is final.
When an animal is adopted before it has been spayed or neutered there is also a “Certificate of Sterilization” form that must be signed. Kansas State Law requires all animals that are adopted from Shelters, Rescues and Pounds be spayed or neutered (K.S.A. 41-1731). This helps to prevent unwanted litters of puppies and kittens as well as prevents certain behaviors and other medical issues. Some animals are adopted out before they are sterilized because they are too young for the procedure. The PCHS allows for a reasonable time period once the animal reaches the age they can be sterilized for it to be performed. Failure to do so will result in the PCHS reclaiming the animal(s) and possible criminal charges, fines, fees and court costs.
